Thank you!
Hey all! We’re back again for another bi-monthly (comics) tea time! Where the tea is behind-the-scenes updates on my comics :) I’m thinking I might switch to a monthly format as we get closer to Cool News, but we will see! For the March update I wanted to talk about 2 things, one great and one cautionary. But let’s get on with the good news first!
The Power of Love and Motorcycles

I’ve been teasing my new project, S.I.R, for a really long time. That’s because my personal philosophy is to hype from Day 1. It keeps me motivated to see it through and I think it’s cool to share how things develop over time! That said, work has been well underway. The script is 60% complete, and interiors have also begun! Without further ado I’m excited to share with you the first sneak peak of S.I.R interiors, exclusive to this newsletter :D

WILL NICO EVER RETURN AVERY’S CALLS? Stay tuned :o
What you may have noticed about this project is that these pages are all inks! FELL! Doing…inks? All the comic pages I’ve ever done in the past were thin lines with colors carrying 90% of the work, so it’s been a welcome challenge to draw this way. I basically consumed Framed Ink, a ton of manga, and asked around the community to send me their inkwork to study. Thank you to everyone who shared their work with me!
And if you remembered what my buildings looked like back in Commander Rao…yeah, I had to learn to draw those too, haha.

(Above: sad rectangles voltroning into a sad building) Don’t worry though because we are going to have a rad colorist down the line to work their magic on this. And I promise, the motorcycles ARE coming!! Though I dread drawing them. Who knew motorcycle fight scenes would be very, very hard to choreograph…. :’)
Speaking of publishing!
If you followed me through twitter or instagram, you may have heard some hubbub about a certain…publisher…not paying their creatives and not responding to emails (among several other not great behaviours). In light of this, I wanted to take a moment to talk about some things I have learned about the publishing landscape. I remember being that young, excited creator eager to have their first book in a comic shop. I tried my best to do my research and ask around, getting a lawyer to review the contracts, and going in with an open mind. But here’s the thing: you can be as careful as you want but at the end of the day there are factors that you can’t control. People move in/out of companies, markets shift, and places get bought out. I had two books release under the same publisher over the span of 2 years, and due to the factors above, I noticed a STARK shift between the two releases. Unfortunately for the worse. I understand the publishing landscape is very difficult for both creatives and the publishers, and we all go in knowing that money is hard to come by in this industry. But in lieu of money, there’s one thing we do have - passion for comics. And with that passion comes community. And with community…communication! I have been met with setbacks on my own published books due to lack of communication, and I wished they would just be transparent with me about delays instead of keeping me on a string. While I know this wasn’t out of malice, when the consequence of incompetence hurts just as much as malice would, the intentions matter less.
I urge all creators to not be afraid to demand their rights. If a publisher bullies you into silence or hands you vague answers, and you don’t feel safe, talk to other peers about it. Reach out. Most likely you’re not the only one going through the same thing. We have power in numbers and companies who do hurtful things - intentionally or not - cannot continue to get away with it simply because they are in positions of power.
We have to look out for each other!
When I Was Young - Now on Backerkit!

When I was Young is a brand new charity anthology to benefit the Trevor Project, helmed by editor Michele Abounader and featuring an absolutely incredible cast of talents! It’s another heartfelt anthology filled with personal tales of triumph, inspiration, and advice we wished we could give our younger selves. I’ll also have a story in this! The project launched yesterday on Backerkit and we are hoping we can raise enough to cover the cost of making this book as well as extra profits to donate. We hope you consider supporting us!
Comic Recc of the Newsletter!
If you’d like to support some incredible creators making books on their on dime, my comic recc for this month is OUR SINS ARE SCARLET - By Jordan Alsaqa, Skylar Patridge, Kelly Fitzpatrick, Bram Meehan, with editors Megan brown, Riley Farmer and Jake Williams. Assassins! Sapphics! Murder! Women! SPYCRAFT! “A rookie handler finds herself caught in the orbit of an expert assassin in the opening chapter of this twisted espionage comic.” I’ve been excited for this project since the team first teased it years ago, and am overjoyed to see it’s already fully funded in two days!! Don’t miss out.
